Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1161: Are We Good? (2025) - Movie Review

It's "Podception Day" at Kicking the Seat, as two podcasters podcast about a podcasting pioneer!

Steven Feinartz's documentary, Are We Good?, follows curmudgeonly comic Marc Maron through his early days on the standup scene, his battles with addiction, divorce, and losing the love of his life--all of which he has chronicled for nearly 16 years on his wildly influential show, "WTF with Marc Maron".

The podcast is best known for getting high-profile guests (Barack Obama, Paul McCartney, Robin Williams) to open up while sitting in Maron's suburban California garage, but Feinartz digs deeper into his subject's own stories to paint a fuller picture of a guy whose relationship to fame is...complicated.

In this spoilerific and (not surprisingly) divided discussion, Ian and David look for the good in Are We Good?, and come out the other side with more questions than answers--chief of which is, "Will non-Maron fans put up with his whining and narcissism for more than ten minutes?"
