Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1085: Escape from Hammerland: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1962)

Is escaping from Hammerland a good idea? Ian and AC are starting to wonder, as they take a look at Terence Fisher's lavish 1962 period piece, The Phantom of the Opera!

Herbert Lom stars as the titular mystery man who lives beneath a prestigious opera house, plotting revenge against the ne'er do well composer who stole his life's work (Michael Gough).

In today's spoilerific discussion, the guys dig into this surprisingly modern take on a film that had the unenviable task of following two iconic predecessors--and whose heightened production design and drama offered moviegoers more than just a rehash!

So why isn't this Phantom more fondly remembered? And how can it be so...bad...yet so impactful?

Yes, this episode is a veritable landmine of Ian and AC's tripping over the numerous story problems while simultaneously praising Fisher and company's brilliant overall presentation!
