Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1063: Se7en at Thirty -- Live Round Table Review

Earth's Mightiest Critics put their heads together for a 30th anniversary round table review of Se7en!

David Fincher's gritty downer of a thriller follows two cops (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) in their pursuit of a homicidal maniac whose M.O. centers on the Seven Deadly Sins. Each crime scene is more grislier than the last, and our heroes are always three steps behind. Could it be that they are being set up as the final victims?

Join us for an unrepentant look at one of the 90s' most disturbing and influential films! We'll also take your questions, comments, and SuperChats!
