Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1054: There's No Stalgia Like Nostalgia: Santa Claus: The Movie (1985)

'Tis the season for re-evaluating controversial and/or forgotten Christmas movies!

Last week, we looked at Love Actually, and on our last installment of "There's No Stalgia Like Nostalgia" of 2024, Ian and Pat unwrap Jeannot Szwarc's notorious 1985 flop, Santa Claus: The Movie!

Produced by the super-team that brought us the Superman franchise, this highly publicized and little-seen would-be blockbuster gives jolly ol' Saint Nick a full-on comic book movie origin story--complete with bestowing of powers, a power-mad villain, and a quest to restore decency to a world gone wrong. David Huddleston plays the titular gift-giver; John Lithgow shows up half-way through the proceedings as a maniacal, corrupt toy tycoon; and Dudley Moore co-stars as an unappreciated rogue elf named Patch.

This saccharine Mickey D's-and-Coke-sponsored epic failed to connect with US audiences, but found a massive fanbase in the UK. In today's spoilerific episode, the guys assess Santa Claus's effectiveness as a holiday movie, as a movie in general, and as an attempt to bring dimension to a holiday character that doesn't exactly scream "pathos"!

Also, Pat talks about his upcoming performance in A Judy Christmas, which returns to Chicago's Den Theatre This Friday (see below for tickets)!
