Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep498: FRIDAY THE 40TH Part 1: You're All Doomed!

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Lee Shoquist of ChicagoFilm.com wade into Crystal Lake for the first installment of "Friday the 40th"! Over the next twelve months, the guys will discuss each movie in the Friday the 13th franchise, which celebrates four decades of fear this year.

First up is the Sean S. Cunningham 1980 slasher classic that upped Halloween's body count and gore, and gave rise to two horror icons. Ian and Lee talk about their early connections with the film and its ensuing series; delve into some behind-the-scenes trivia; and float a handful of theories that might just change the way you look at Mrs. Voorhees' murderous summer camp rampage!

Also, Ian taps the breaks as the Kicking the Seat Podcast rounds the corner on its 500th episode, and recommends checking out the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel for the video version of this conversation (so you can actually see our props!).

Episode 498 has got a death curse!
