Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep495: The Cage Gauge

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie trip over themselves trying to comprehend Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space! The H.P. Lovecraft adaptation finds family man Nicolas Cage losing his mind after a meteor lands in his front yard. As an alien intelligence attaches itself to people, plants, and alpacas, the very fabric of reality begins to warp in vibrant purple waves.

The film has garnered a lot of praise, and Ian and David work their way through a movie whose problems are so numerous and homages so blatant that they wonder how anyone can take it seriously. Yes, this is a full-spoiler discussion, so turn back now lest ye be spoilt!

Also, Ian clues you in on Color Out of Space's Music Box run, and recommends a brand new YouTube commentary on Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen!

Episode 495 is all Caged heat!
