Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep451: BLOOD Drive

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie break out their reddest bandannas for two very different movies opening this weekend. First up, Sylvester Stallone returns for one last (?) rampage in Rambo: Last Blood. Is there still juice left in the franchise? And is there anything left to say with this character? The guys' answer may just knock you for a loop.

Next, Ian and David talk about one of the year's best and most gripping films, Monos, which opens today in limited release. Director Alejandro Landes drops audiences into the Columbian jungle, where a child militia has been tasked with guarding a kidnapped American engineer. As nature, circumstance, and betrayal unravel this tight-knit group of friends, Monos descends into picturesque, armrest-gripping madness.

If you're in Chicago tonight, you can actually meet Alejandro Landes during his post-screening Q&A for the Music Box's 7pm screening!

Ian also reminds listeners to catch up with Jim Gaffigan in American Dreamer on VOD or at the Emagine Theatre in Frankfort, IL.

Lastly, check out the latest video on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel for an early review of Olive Films' outrageous Signature edition Blu-ray of Roger Corman's A Bucket of Blood!

Stop! Or Episode 451 will shoot!
