Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep422: Two Americas

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Erik Childress of the Movie Madness Podcast look back on 25 years of Forrest Gump. Robert Zemeckis' Academy Award-winning drama is a Where's Waldo? road trip of Americana that is as divisive as it is beloved among some moviegoers. How does Forrest Gump fit in with Zemeckis' overall filmography? And is the film's take on the American Dream really misunderstood?

On a similar note, Ian recently interviewed director Gigi Saul Guerrero, whose feature debut, Culture Shock, premieres July 4th as part of Hulu's "Into the Dark" series. Guerrero sat down at the Thompson Hotel a couple weeks ago, ahead of showing the film at Cinepocalypse, and talked about the politics of Culture Shock, her filmmaking influences, and how the original Child's Play helped spark her horror fandom.

Also, Ian can't stop making YouTube videos!
