Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep403: America Runs on DECAF DON

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast looks at one of the year's most unexpected and important films, Decaf Don! Last week, Ian sat down with writer/director Nick Alonzo, cinematographer Greg Nico Garibay, and stars Dennis Episcopo and Mario Anthony to discuss the off-kilter new dramedy about an unemployed teacher whose past comes back to haunt him the night before a big job interview.

A chance encounter with a former student leads to an intense evening of revelations and heated, hot-button arguments that chillingly captures the national mood. This conversation digs into Decaf Don's origins; the challenges of dramatizing controversial viewpoints; and grocery store pitch meetings.

Also, Ian braces for Avengers: Endgame, and talks about how you can support Clare Cooney's magnificent new short film, Runner, as it winds down a spectacularly successful Seed & Spark campaign!

Episode 403 will keep you up at night!
