Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep400: They Might've Been Giants

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel celebrate four hundred episodes with a look at a film you may never get to see! Terry Gilliam's long-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote spent nearly thirty years in development, only to play as a one-night Fathom Event earlier this week.

The guys talk about the disasters that plagued not only the production (as chronicled in the superior 2002 documentary, Lost in La Mancha) but the final film as well.

Also, Ian talks about A Dark Place, the unique new drama from Shout! Factory, which opens this weekend at Facets Cinematheque and on VOD.

Episode 400 isn't a giant--it's a windmill!
