Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep347: MDMA'd in America

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast ventures into 80s ecstasy excess with writer/director Angie Wang, whose debut feature, MDMA, opens this Friday in select theatres and On Demand! The new drama from Shout! Studios centers on Wang's real-life exploits as a struggling college student who turns a small-time drug-manufacturing scheme into a full-blown, dangerous business--while also juggling class issues, family conflict, and coming face-to-face with the effects of narcotics on people all across the economic spectrum.

Ian spoke with Wang about what inspired her to tackle filmmaking after illustrious careers in Silicon Valley and helping at-risk youth. They also discuss MDMA's influences, and the tricky business of incorporating genre tropes without succumbing to them.

Episode 347 is based on a true story!
