Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep299: WRINKLE Cream

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast travels nine billion miles across the universe in the blink of an eye with David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel and Don Shanahan of Every Movie Has a Lesson! Their destination: Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time, the big-screen adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's beloved novel. Will Disney continue its billion-dollar-movie streak with this colorful yet disjointed fantasy about a little girl who travels the universe to find her missing-scientist father? Or might audiences have trouble connecting with the material, despite the looming presence of Her Majesty, Oprah Winfrey?

Speaking of big-screen adaptations, Ian talks about the Music Box Theatre's upcoming "Sci-Fi Spielberg" retrospective--in which some of the legendary director's biggest films return for a limited engagement, before a special 70MM presentation of his latest, Ready Player One!

Episode 299 is truly worthy of your love!
