Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep196: Dark Knight of the Soul

Today, Ian and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie form a dynamic duo to take on The Lego Batman Movie! How can a two-hour toy commercial mine more humor and pathos from the Caped Crusader's mythology than just about any live-action Batman film? And what does the movie's success mean for future live-action incarnations of the Dark Knight? The guys get into all of this and more, and even touch on whether or not Ian's reading of the original Lego Movie is off-base.

Also, Ian shares a reminder about tomorrow's kick-off of the limited engagement of Unbroken Glass at Chicago's Gene Siskel Film Center, featuring post-screening Q&A's with director Dinesh Das Sabu and special guests. And listen up for some info regarding an exclusive IFP Chicago meet-up for the film next Wednesday (2/22).

Lastly, there's a legal battle afoot regarding the public-domain status of Manos: The Hands of Fate. Ian has news of how you can help keep Manos free for the next half-century and beyond!

This is pure speculation, but Sad Affleck might just need a trauma blanket after listening to Episode 196!

Note: The music for this episode comes courtesy of Watertower Music's The Lego Batman Movie Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available now on CD and at major on-line music retailers!
