Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep273: Late Screening: GRADUATE Degrees

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and ColeTries.com return with another edition of Late Screening! Last week, Ian, Cole, and Erin Maturo watched The Graduate, which had somehow escaped their collective attention for half a century!

Ian and Cole sat down to discuss Mike Nichols' seminal dark comedy about a recent college graduate (Dustin Hoffman) who must balance a relationship with the girl next door (Katharine Ross), an affair with her mother (Anne Bancroft), and an uncertain future. How does the film hold up? Is it as relevant to Millennials as it was to 1960's youth? And how much Simon & Garfunkel is too much Simon & Garfunkel?

The answer to these questions and more await in a conversation that's anything but plastic.

Episode 273 is, in fact, trying to seduce you!
