Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep259: Rob Zombie's Last Day of October

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast welcomes back Aaron Christensen of Horror 101 with Dr. A.C. to help kick off the annual Horror 101 "Scare-a-Thon"! Every day this month, the good doctor will watch as many fright flicks as he can manage in order to raise money for the American Women's Self Defense Organization and IMPACT Chicago!

To get in the spirit of the season, Ian and Aaron talk about Rob Zombie's 31, a crowd-funded slice of nastiness that takes viewers on a roller coaster ride of unique underground terrors--allegedly. As you'll hear, the guys appreciate what Zombie has achieved as an independent voice in genre filmmaking, while acknowledging that his bag of tricks is well frayed at the seams.

Also, Ian mentions the Shortcut 100 film festival, which takes over the Music Box Theatre on Sunday, and offers a few words about this particularly dark day.

Episode 259 hopes to re-light your Jack-o-lantern!
