Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep264: The Song of CHAVELA

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast sits down with Catherine Gund, co-director of Chavela, which opens Friday at Chicago's Music Box Theatre! This eye-opening documentary chronicles the rocky life and career of Chavela Vargas, who spent decades building a music career in Mexico before finding international fame in Spain. Gund talks about how she discovered Chavela at a crucial time in her life; the long journey to bring the singer's story to the big screen; and how Chavela's forward-looking embrace of her sexual identity and artistic boldness underscore the hypocrisies of the entertainment world.

Episode 264 is a celebration of those who live on the edge and give us courage in our daily struggles.
