Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep187: 20TH CENTURY WOMEN on THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN

The Kicking the Seat Podcast shakes it up this week, as Ian welcomes back David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel, and special guest Pamela Powell of Reel Honest Reviews and Daily Journal. What does 20th Century Women, a drama about a 70s-era single mom and her misfit tenants, have to do with The Edge of Seventeen, a contemporary teen dramedy in the John Hughes tradition? Quite a bit, actually. Ian, Pam, and David examine both of these complex and very entertaining films about women, and tell you why they should not be missed!

Also, Ian kicks off the episode with an eerily prescient chunk of audio from Jimmy Carter's "Crisis of Confidence" speech (as referenced in 20th Century Women), and provides one last push for We Believe in Dinosaurs, whose IndieGoGo campaign wraps up tomorrow!

Do you seek certainty in uncertain times? Well, Episode 187 is a great place to start!*
