Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep138: DEMON Worship

This week, the Kicking the Seat Podcast puts on its best face to discuss Nicolas Winding Refn's fashion-world horror fantasy, The Neon Demon! Following an advance screening last week, David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel joined Ian to share his thoughts on the film, and to help put it (and Refn's career) into perspective. The guys' chat concludes with a few words of appreciation for the late, great Anton Yelchin, who'd passed away the day before.

Also, Ian recommends the latest episode of Erik Childress' Movie Madness Podcast (which features a decidedly different take on The Neon Demon), and talks a bit about the film's newly released soundtrack from Milan Records.

Episode 138 gets plenty chatty and catty, so sharpen your knives and strike a pose!
