Closing out our blockbuster four-episode week is an interview Ian conducted with writer/producer Craig Shilowich, whose wonderful new film Christine opens today in limited release. The movie centers on Christine Chubbuck, a Florida news reporter who shot herself on-air in 1974.
Shilowich, director Antonio Campos, and actress Rebecca Hall turn sensationalism into soulfulness with a realistic look at media, depression, and the fragility of human relationships. As you'll soon hear, the honesty comes from experience, and Shilowich describes the challenges in getting the film made, as well as the care that went into delivering as faithful a movie as possible to Christine's real life story.
If you're in the Chicagoland area tonight, you can catch Christine at the Music Box Theatre, where actor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Letts will participate in a post-screening Q&A, moderated by Steve "Capone" Prokopy of Ain't it Cool News.
Also Ian has some other moviegoing goings-on to recommend this weekend, including Raising Bertie at the Siskel Center; a double dose of Amy Adams in Arrival and Nocturnal Animals; and the first chapter of the Potter-verse prequel series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Don't despair, folks. Episode 171 is a real upper of a downer!
