Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Those Who Can...Write!

Hey, Everyone!  Sorry it's been quiet this week.

I'm taking a bit of a break in order to write a short story.  Yes, every once in awhile it's good to feed the beast with an act of pure creation (the pretentious way of saying that after more than a year-and-a-half of non-stop film criticism, I need to try something different).

I'll spill more details once the dust settles, but your first clue is that I'm writing about movies.

In the meantime, feel free to peruse the Stub Drawer for some classic critiques, and be sure to stay on top of the Backlot Gossip, which I'll update as I'm able.

Check back this weekend for reviews of Fast Five and Broadcast News!

Until then, thanks for reading, and take care.
