Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep530: The Slowdown: Cold Turkey

Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast and writer/director Sujewa Ekanayake welcome Liam Billingham of the Oeuvre Busters podcast for a look at Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Slow Cinema murder mystery, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia!

During a long night in the Turkish countryside, a team of investigators follows two murder suspects to the site of a buried corpse. This tense and often darkly comic film features great faces, grand themes, and a final third that's so open to interpretation that our three hosts get into quite the scrape over it! Listen in for an in-depth look at the film, and a multi-faceted debate about art, criticism, and culture.

Also, Ian recommends two of his guest appearances this week: talking about the 1994 Madeleine Stowe western Bad Girls on The Spoiler Room, and the evolution of home video on You'll Probably Agree!

Episode 530 can't remember where it left the body!
