Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep521: RE-ANIMATOR, Revisited

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Mark Krawczyk of Special Mark Productions pay tribute to the late, great Stuart Gordon with a look at his debut feature, Re-Animator! The film, which turns thirty-five this year, stars Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, and Barbara Crampton as three med students caught up in a series of clandestine experiments designed to bring the dead back to life.

This bizarre and bloody adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's serialized short story, "Herbert West, ReAnimator", put Gordon on the map and serves as a critical pillar in the horror/comedy genre. Ian and Mark revisit the film to see how it holds up three-and-a-half decades on--particularly the infamous "head" scene! They also talk about what made Stuart Gordon's career so very special.

Episode 521 can maintain consciousness six to twelve minutes after death!
