Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep515: The Slowdown: Going Viral

Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast and writer/director Sujewa Ekanayake return with a rather topical edition of "The Slowdown" as they look at Steven Soderbergh's 2011 pandemic thriller, Contagion!

Ian didn't care for the film on release, but given our current global crisis, he was compelled to give it another (more generous) watch. The result was revelatory--not only in terms of the filmmakers' prescience, but in the way Contagion slyly conforms to some key tenets of Slow Cinema.

Also, Sujewa unveils a new title for his upcoming film, Slow Romance, and discusses his plans for shooting an indie film amidst a chaotic and ever-changing socio-political whirlwind!

Episode 515 just as a little cough. It's fine.
