Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep154: Not-So-Endless Summer Nights

Mercifully, fall is upon us and the Kicking the Seat Podcast looks back through the bloated, depressing muck that was the summer 2016 blockbuster movie season to a simpler time--to the dawn of a hopeful era in which the Russo Brothers' Captain America: Civil War promised a smart and thrilling few months. This is one of Ian's favorite movies of the year, and he's joined once again by Aaron Christensen (of the the film blog Horror 101 with Dr. A.C.), who had not seen the film before their get-together last week.

Is there more to this second Cap sequel than spectacle and universe building? Does Marvel really have an artistic edge on DC Universe films? And does anybody really care about Thanos anymore?

Listen in as the guys talk about what works, what really works, and what could use some touching up as the Marvel movies gradually converge into the singularity of a four-color mega-franchise.

If you don't listen to Episode 154, you're no better than the bad guys!
